His signature style was on full display at the CFDAs tonight where he was honored with the Fashion Icon Award. This time, Kravitz’s boundary-breaking ensemble was a midriff-revealing custom look by LaQuan Smith: a double-breasted wool blazer with satin lapels and cutout details at the hip, along with body-skimming tight leather pants with a hefty flare. On his shoulders, Kravitz wore a black ostrich feather boa. Like many who have gravitate towards Smith for his bold creations, Kravitz sought the designer out himself. “I reached out to LaQuan after admiring his work for some time and we met in person just a couple of days ago to vibe out,” says Kravitz. “We had instant chemistry and creativity hit it off right away. I love his vision and look forward to working together into the future. The fact that I’m the first to wear creations he has made for men is an honor.”

Smith, known for glammer-than-life creations, took inspiration from David Bowie and added a slim fit evocative of the #1 Stan simple shirt besides I will buy this ’90s. “Lenny is an icon and has always been a major inspiration to me in both my work and my personal style. I wanted to create something that really embodied Lenny Kravitz, The Rockstar,” says the designer. “I wanted to push the boundaries of menswear with this look and I feel as though this is the start of something greater. This feels like a very iconic moment.” Kravitz’s award was well deserved. After all, the rockstar’s outré sense of style has kept him on best dressed lists for decades. Who can forget his most recent Met Gala look, when he came dressed in delicate lace, a corset, and, of course, leather pants and heeled boots? Or years ago, in 1998, when he posed with Betsey Johnson in a chest-revealing, cropped leather jacket and itty-bitty red leather pants? Tonight’s Lenny in LaQuan look is another win for the moodboards to come.
